(Well, 3 months and our agenda and this month we’ll finally get to it!) FileMaker released several new Templates that include some add-on modules. They are nicely done and will have an impact on our work as developers.
We will review them together, see what we can learn from their code and structure. We will also have an open discussion about their impact on our businesses, potential clients (will this steal some potential business or tee it up?), look at how they really work – and don’t. We’ll also look at other FileMaker templates and starter solutions.
Flexible User Authorization
I (Jim) recently made two changes in how I manage user authorization to perform specific tasks in a solution. The situation was kind of complex, but the needs were very clear:
• One database solution
• One parent organization
• Four businesses owned and run by the parent organization
• Inconsistency in the roles and responsibilities and authorization
structure across the 4 businesses
• Some users needed authorization to work across all businesses, some
across just the one, or maybe 2, or 3
• Managing purely via Privilege Set would be a nightmare
• The client needed the ability to turn authorizations on and off quickly and
easily for hide conditions, validate authorization within script (“is this person
authorized to do this?”)
• Permissions needed to be changed only by management from the
parent organization only
I made a simple change in my data structure months ago and set up a custom function to help. Since then I continue to find a lot of unexpected (but welcome!) simplification in development and the client is easily able to manage changes to user permissions!
Guess what – pizza! If you are eating with the group, please plan on a suggested donation of $7.
However, if pizza (or a sandwich) isn’t your thing, please feel free to bring your own lunch. There is a fridge, freezer, microwave, and toaster oven available – release your inner chef! Drinks provided with your donation.
